I keep your business running.
You keep running your business.

For owner-run businesses with 3 to 25 people and no IT department. You get one person who knows your setup, explains things in plain English, and fixes it.

A Website That Brings in Customers

A fast, mobile-friendly site, set up so customers find you on Google. Fixed price, agreed up front, then kept updated so it never goes stale.

Email & Accounts, Sorted

Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace set up properly. New hires set up before their first day, departing staff's access removed cleanly, and no paying for licenses nobody uses.

Protection From the Bad Day

2-step login, protected laptops, and backups I've actually tested by restoring them. Skip one of these and a single phishing email can lock up the whole business.

Help When Something Breaks

Call or email the engineer who already knows your setup, so you never explain your business twice. Most fixes happen remotely without anyone leaving their desk, and updates and monitoring run in the background so fewer things break.

The Right Equipment

Laptops, wifi, and printers chosen for how your business works, not upsold. I order it, then set it up remotely once it arrives.

Use AI Without Leaking Your Data

ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini can save your team real time, but free versions may keep what you paste in. I set up the right business plans and privacy settings, give staff a one-page "what's OK to paste" policy, and automate the busywork: drafting replies, summarizing email, sorting inquiries.

A good fit if you

  • ✓Run a business with 3 to 25 people and no IT person
  • ✓Want one person to call for email, website, security, laptops, and accounts
  • ✓Would rather pay a known monthly amount than an hourly bill
  • ✓Are fine with help over a video call instead of in person

Not a fit if you

  • ✕Need someone on site to run cabling, mount cameras, or install equipment
  • ✕Want a large help desk with a team on shift around the clock

Senior engineering, without the full-time hire.

Project and contract work for in-house IT teams and MSPs that need a senior engineer for a migration, a redesign, or a backlog nobody has time for. Remote, scoped up front, documented when done.

Network Engineering

Routing, switching, SD-WAN, and segmentation design on Cisco, Palo Alto, and UniFi. From an engineer who has designed segmentation across global data centers and rolled out SD-WAN.

Systems Administration

Linux and Windows Server, Active Directory and Entra ID, Microsoft 365 administration, virtualization, patching, and access cleanup.

Security & Firewalls

Firewall policy reviews and rebuilds, network access control, zero-trust segmentation, and security platform migrations.

Cloud & Migrations

Azure, GCP, and hybrid architecture. Migrations are planned with a rollback path before cutover.

Automation & AI Operations

Ansible, scripting, and infrastructure as code. LLM-assisted log and alert triage that drafts the fix and keeps an engineer approving it, plus security reviews of AI tools before they reach your users.

Audits & Documentation

Inherited a network or environment nobody documented? Get a written assessment, diagrams, and a prioritized fix list.

How It Works

1

Free 15-Minute Review

A 15-minute video call. I look at your accounts, backups, website, and how your team gets help today. You keep the one-page list of what to fix either way.

2

A Written Plan

You get a written scope and the price before any work starts. If something new comes up, you approve it first.

3

Fixed, Then Kept Running

I do the work remotely and document everything I set up. A flat monthly plan keeps it updated and watched.

Why This Works

I'm James Kirkpatrick. I've spent 13+ years in enterprise infrastructure: networks, Palo Alto and Cisco security, servers, and automation. I've designed segmentation across global data centers, migrated thousands of users between security platforms, rolled out SD-WAN, and automated network operations at scale.

Most small businesses get IT help from a relative, whoever's nearby, or nobody at all. Northern Edge gives you an engineer trained on enterprise-scale systems, working directly with you, on a plan sized for your business.

Common Questions

What happens on the free IT review?
A 15-minute video call. I look at your email and accounts, backups, website, AI tool use, and how your team gets support today. You get a one-page written list of what's costing you money or about to break. No obligation.
Can you really support my business remotely?
Yes. Almost everything a small business needs (accounts, email, security, backups, websites, laptops, network settings) is managed through secure remote tools. Nothing is accessed without your permission.
Is it safe to let you into our computers remotely?
I only connect when you've asked for help or approved planned work, using my own named login with 2-step verification, never a shared password. Your business keeps ownership of its accounts and admin passwords, and you can remove my access at any time.
Is it safe for my staff to use ChatGPT or Copilot?
It can be, with the right setup. The risk usually isn't the tool. It's staff pasting customer or company information into a free personal account nobody checked. I move you to business plans with the right data controls, write a one-page policy your team will actually read, and show you which tasks are worth automating.
What if something needs a person on site?
I don't do on-site work. Most small business problems don't need a visit. When something physical needs doing, like plugging in a new device, I'll walk you or a staff member through it on a video call. If it truly needs a technician in the room, I'll tell you plainly and give you a written list of exactly what to ask them for.
You're one person. What if you're unavailable?
Fair question. Everything I set up is documented and stored in your accounts, not in my head. If I'm away, you'll hear about it ahead of time whenever possible, and because your setup is written down, any other IT provider could pick it up. You're never locked in.
Do you charge by the hour?
Website projects are a fixed price agreed up front. Ongoing support is a flat monthly plan with a set amount of time included, and you approve anything beyond it before it's billed. Engineering work is quoted per engagement.
Do you work with in-house IT teams?
Yes. Network, systems, cloud, and automation engineering on a project or contract basis: firewall and routing work, server and identity administration, migrations, and Ansible automation.
How is this different from a typical managed service provider?
You work directly with the engineer. No ticket queue, no account manager, no tier-1 handoffs. The person who answers is the person who fixes it.
